Jordan Henderson: 'Brilliant' Anfield atmosphere lifted Reds past City

Captain Jordan Henderson said Liverpool took advantage of a "brilliant" atmosphere to grab a 3-0 win over Manchester City in the Champions League on Wednesday.

The first leg of the quarterfinal threatened to boil over before kickoff as Liverpool fans damaged the City bus as it arrived at Anfield, leading to a raucous setting that saw Liverpool grab three goals in the opening 31 minutes.

"We knew the atmosphere would be brilliant and it was, and we made the most of that," Henderson told BT Sport. "Second half they came at us more, we dropped deep at times.

"Our game is about working together as a team and we did that brilliantly. We all chipped in with the hard yards.

However, Liverpool talisman Mohamed Salah picked up an injury in the second half, while Henderson was booked and will be suspended for the return leg in Manchester next week.

"It's only the first leg," Henderson added. "I didn't make many fouls in the game so it's disappointing to miss out next week."

After Salah's opener, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain unleashed an unstoppable strike past a helpless Ederson and into the top corner to double the lead, before Sadio Mane made the lead three goals heading into the break.

"It was a great start for us to go three up before half-time, it set us up perfectly," Oxlade-Chamberlain said. "The crowd, the atmosphere was unbelievable and that's why we started like we did.

"It was a good strike, it opened up for me and I have been working on that."
