Jurgen Klopp: Liverpool's 'new players' help avoid need to spend more

DUBLIN -- Jurgen Klopp believes the preseason has given Liverpool "new players" without having to make further moves in the transfer window.

This summer has seen Liverpool sign Mohamed Salah from Roma for a club-record fee, while also adding Andrew Robertson and Dominic Solanke from Hull City and Chelsea respectively.

Meanwhile, Klopp feels the improvement of Alberto Moreno, who was widely expected to leave Anfield this summer, is one example of him having further options as the Spaniard's presence allows James Milner to be moved from left-back into his preferred central midfield.

Speaking in Dublin at a news conference following Liverpool's win over Athletic Bilbao in their final preseason friendly, Klopp said: "We always said that until Aug. 31 we run through the world with open eyes. It's clear.

"We don't decide alone, it's other clubs. It's all about others clubs. I thought this preseason brought us new players, if you want.

"Alberto Moreno is 100 percent back, which is very nice after a really difficult year. Andrew Robertson shows all the skills. He, of course, still has to adapt because he's not here too long, but you can already see what a threat he is going to be offensively.

"That means Milly is free from midfield, so without being in the transfer market we have a new midfield player, which is nice.

"Dom Solanke, he already showed that he is ready for some adult football. Ryan Kent, I know him one and a half years. Last year he developed unbelievably and this preseason is completely different to last preseason.

"Without too much money for these players, because they were pretty much already ours, we have additions in the squad so that's good."

Injuries are beginning to pile up within the Liverpool squad ahead of the start of the 2017-18 campaign.

Adam Lallana has been ruled out for up to three months with a thigh injury, while Nathaniel Clyne is almost certain to miss the Premier League opener at Watford next weekend.

Philippe Coutinho missed the Bilbao friendly with what Liverpool say was a "sore back" as did Jordan Henderson through illness, while Daniel Sturridge continues to be sidelined with a thigh problem.

"Everyone knows about the injury of Adam Lallana, which was a big blow. But this team has dealt with so many difficult situations, they will deal with this too," Klopp said when asked how he would manage the squad while competing on multiple fronts.

"Phil had a back problem yesterday, so there was no reason for any risk. Hendo had a little problem -- nothing with muscles, a little bit ill. Daniel, of course, muscle.

"But the squad is big and I thought especially today that showed. If we can manage it, then we are OK.

"It's not my problem at the moment. I prepare for the Watford game from tomorrow and then next game and then I can think about it."
