Jurgen Klopp 'pretty sure' Steven Gerrard will boss academy team

LIVERPOOL -- Jurgen Klopp has said he is "pretty sure" that Steven Gerrard will take charge of one of Liverpool's academy teams next season.

On Tuesday, reports emerged that former Liverpool captain Gerrard would manage the under-18's from the start of the 2017-18 campaign.

Gerrard, who ended his 19-year playing career in November, returned to Liverpool in a floating coaching role at the club's Kirkby academy in February.

Manager Klopp told reporters at a news conference on Thursday: "There's not a real announcement to do in this moment.

"But what I can say, probably, is yes. He will be the coach of a youth team next season, I'm pretty sure. We will tell you exactly which team when we want to tell you."

Klopp said Gerrard was "doing a real job at the academy with his presence, being around and giving advice, leading little and bigger sessions. They all enjoy it a lot, and he enjoys it a lot."

Meanwhile, the Liverpool manager ruled captain Jordan Henderson and Adam Lallana out of Sunday's trip to West Bromwich Albion.

Henderson has been absent since February with a foot problem, while Lallana has missed Liverpool's last three matches after picking up a thigh injury while on England duty.

Klopp said Henderson could return to team training next week, with Lallana scheduled to participate in sessions at Melwood after the game against Crystal Palace on April 23.

"With Jordan, it was clear from the beginning that it's not a fixed time until he is back," Klopp said.

"We have to wait until he feels absolutely nothing, that's how it is. That's what we are still waiting for.

"With Adam, it is a little bit easier to say. I am pretty sure after the Crystal Palace game, he will probably be in normal training and that means then [for Watford] he is in the squad or we can think about him then."

Klopp also confirmed that there is "no clause" in Liverpool's loan agreement with Crystal Palace over Mamadou Sakho for the London club to sign the defender on a permanent deal.
