Liverpool youth 'need confidence' gained in FA Cup - Jurgen Klopp

Jurgen Klopp believes the experience of Wednesday night's FA Cup third-round replay victory over Plymouth Argyle will benefit the Liverpool youngsters that were involved.

The Reds set up a home date with Wolverhampton Wanderers in the fourth round of the competition following a 1-0 win at Home Park.

Lucas Leiva's first competitive goal since September 2010 was enough to secure progression for a young Liverpool side, which included the likes of Ben Woodburn, Ovie Ejaria, Trent Alexander-Arnold and debutant Harry Wilson, who came on as a substitute.

Speaking to BT Sport about the match, Klopp said: "Maybe it was not the most exciting game but for us it's very important because with Trent Alexander-Arnold, he could play against Man United because he played in the first leg against Plymouth. Another game for the youth boys -- Harry Wilson, first game.

"How I said before, I love this in football. Everybody can cause everybody problems. That's how it is.

"If you see it like it is in the first half, maybe you score an early goal and the game changed a little bit. You get more confidence and these boys need confidence.

"For you, it looks a bit embarrassing when you lose a challenge because we are Liverpool and they are Plymouth, but that makes no sense.

"Football is like this, you cannot play without mistakes, losing challenges and stuff like this. I think in the second half we did a little better.

"OK, we want to go into the next round without extra time, without [a] penalty shootout. We want to go home early because the next game is waiting. Now are in the next round and Wolves can come."

The Reds' League Two opponents came close to scoring an unlikely equaliser when Jake Jervis hit the post in the 75th minute.

Despite some nervy moments, Klopp was pleased with how his young side were in control for large periods of the contest.

"The longer you don't score, the more exciting it gets," Klopp said. "You saw that when they started getting pretty direct.

"Again, [we were] not used to it and they have not played a lot together. In these situations, I was not too happy with how we defended them.

"OK, they had a few chances but we did well, especially in the last 20 minutes, [to] control the game. One or two chances, but then we controlled the game again."
