Liverpool's Simon Mignolet: EFL Cup victory showed strength in depth

Simon Mignolet has said he believes Tuesday's 2-0 EFL Cup win over Leeds United showed Liverpool's strength in depth.

Manager Jurgen Klopp made eight changes to his side for the quarterfinal tie, with goals from Divock Origi and 17-year-old Ben Woodburn putting them into the semifinals.

Goalkeeper Mignolet, who replaced Loris Karius in the starting XI, believes the victory showed the level of ability Klopp has at his disposal.

"I'm pleased with how we performed and I think we deserved to go to the semis," he told Liverpool's official website. "We've got a busy January coming up, but we love that.

"Everybody is pushing in training. We're working hard to make sure we're ready when there is an injury or a suspension.

"In this period, we'll need the whole squad and everybody's shown again that they can step in when needed. That's very important for the whole club to know."

Mignolet made his first appearance since the match against Tottenham Hotspur in the previous round of the competition last month.

He said: "It's not always easy when you know you're not playing, but you train for yourself to make sure you stay fit and be ready.

"In football things can change very quickly, so you have to stay focused and that's what I try to do."

Woodburn stole the headlines at Anfield as his 80th-minute strike saw him become Liverpool's youngest-ever goal scorer at the age of 17 years and 45 days.

Mignolet was full of praise for Woodburn's contribution after coming off the substitutes' bench, saying: "He will remember that for the rest of his life.

"Congratulations not only to him but all the young boys -- when they come in, they take their chance and they show that they've got a lot of talent."
