Philippe Coutinho stretchered off for Liverpool against Sunderland

LIVERPOOL -- Jurgen Klopp has said Liverpool must wait for the results of a scan on Philippe Coutinho's injury after the forward was taken off on a stretcher in the 2-0 win over Sunderland on Saturday.

The Brazilian was challenged by Didier Ndong inside the Sunderland area in the 34th minute and immediately called for the attention of medical staff before being carried off and replaced by Divock Origi.

The signs did not appear to be promising as a protective splint was placed on his right foot, but Klopp told a news conference the pain in the Brazilian's foot had decreased.

"We have to wait for the scan," the manager said. "In this moment is it something with the ankle. That's it. We all have to wait.

"He had pain. It was very painful in the first moment, but when I saw him at half-time he said the pain was much better.

"But we have to wait. If I have no idea what it is then I can't imagine how long it will be. I'm quite an optimistic guy, so I hope he can train tomorrow!"

Meanwhile, Roberto Firmino came off after 87 minutes, limping slightly, but Klopp said he was "much better than Phil" and had "pain in the calf."

Striker Daniel Sturridge missed the game due to a tight calf, with Klopp saying the England international had not trained in the build up to the game and was unaware when he would be able to return.

"He has a tight calf and didn't train since two days ago," the Reds boss added. "Actually, I have no idea when he is back. It's not sure that he can train tomorrow, so he was out because of this injury."
