Jurgen Klopp welcomes Michael Edwards as Liverpool sporting director

LIVERPOOL -- Jurgen Klopp has welcomed the appointment of Michael Edwards as Liverpool sporting director and insists the manager will always have final say on transfers in and out of the club.

Sources told ESPN FC on Thursday that Edwards was set to be promoted from technical director to the newly created role, before the club officially confirmed the news on Friday morning.

Edwards will now oversee the club's football operations and is responsible for player recruitment, identification, sales and retention.

The role will see Edwards, who has been at Liverpool since 2011, engage in transfer discussions with players and agents, with Klopp adamant that a manager cannot be a "one-man show" at a football club.

Speaking at a news conference on Friday morning, Klopp said: "From my point of view, it's a very natural decision. When you have the right person at the club then you have to use them in the right way and that's what we've done since I'm here.

"Working with Michael was full of faith, trust and all these things you need. Transfers go the same way in the end.

"At the start maybe it's different, because whoever brings the player to the table -- whether it's me, my assistant, Michael or the scouting department -- then we have a lot of things to watch and talk about and in the end, I will always have the final say.

"Maybe that's the most important thing for you to know. If something was wrong since I'm here, or will go wrong while I'm here in the future with transfers, it's my responsibility. But all the work we have to do until the player is here, you need a lot of really good people around and he is really good -- he's done a lot of different jobs at the club and it was absolutely natural and easy to make this decision."

Klopp added: "As I understand it, it's only in England where it's bigger than it is. All over the world, football clubs work like this -- short ways, quick decisions and knowledge and everything you need to make the right decision at the right time. From now on it happens with Michael Edwards, our sporting director, involved.

"As a manager, I say 'maybe we should go for this player' and most of the talk has to do with agents and all that stuff. Why should I do this? We need a network of people for the big talks, the little talks. I'm involved in all the big talks, but not the small things. This doesn't mean there's more time for me or anything. What we are trying to create is a structure for the future of LFC.

Klopp, who worked within a similar structure while at Borussia Dortmund, hopes the changes at club bring forth a period of stability that has been lacking at Anfield in recent history, and can sustain success even when a manager departs.

"The problem I would say, is this wonderful club has changed philosophy three or four times in the last 10-15 years with different managers coming in and changing everything -- that's the English way of doing things," Klopp added.

"We are trying to create a situation where everything around is perfect, so even if the manager changes, then the club still has a good base for the future."

Speaking after the appointment was confirmed on Friday, Edwards said on the club's official website: "I've been proud to be part of the football operations structure here at Liverpool and it's a great honour to be asked to lead it going forward, in this new role of sporting director.

"We have a brilliant team of people who all make a huge contribution to the process of player transfers and retention, together with recruitment for the senior team, development squad and our Academy.

"Jurgen's belief and confidence in what we have done is also welcomed and was a big factor in me making the decision to accept this position. It's critical that we are always focused on development and improvement across all areas of the football operation.

"It's an exciting challenge to be tasked with the responsibility of reviewing our practices and then implementing positive changes as and when they are needed. I know I'll be supported by a brilliant group of people while doing this."
