Liverpool draw with Manchester United in under-23 clash

A Liverpool under-23 side that featured Mamadou Sakho and Danny Ings drew 1-1 with Manchester United on Tuesday night.

Just under 24 hours after the club's first teams played out a 0-0 draw, Liverpool captain Harry Wilson's first-half strike was cancelled out by a penalty from Josh Harrop shortly after half-time in the Premier League 2 clash at Leigh Sports Village.

Liverpool might have snatched it in the final moments of the game through Ings, but United keeper Sam Johnstone -- who signed a new contract this week -- pushed his header over the bar.

Sakho and Ings once again started for Michael Beale's U23 team as they struggle to force their way into Jurgen Klopp's first-team plans, while summer signing Marko Grujic was also handed a run-out with Liverpool's youngsters.

The trio played the entire 90 minutes on Tuesday night as they seek to earn valuable match fitness.

Sakho has yet to feature for Liverpool's senior side this season after he went against the club's wishes in not leaving Anfield on loan during the summer.

Ings' only appearance for Klopp in 2016-17 came in the EFL Cup third-round trip to Derby County when the former Burnley frontman came on as a second-half substitute.

Grujic, meanwhile, played all of that tie against Derby and has a further two Premier League substitute cameos under his belt during his first campaign at the Merseyside outfit.

Liverpool U23s next play on Sunday afternoon when they take on local rivals Everton at Prenton Park, the home of National League side Tranmere Rovers.
