Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp frustrated by festive fixture congestion

LIVERPOOL -- Jurgen Klopp has hit out at the decision to change a number of Liverpool's fixtures over the festive period.

On Friday, it was announced that eight Liverpool games in December and January have been rescheduled for television coverage.

Manager Klopp said he was "not too happy" about the lack of time between the home game against Manchester City on New Year's Eve and the trip to Sunderland on Jan. 2.

Liverpool kick off against City at 5:30 p.m. and then travel to the Northeast to kick off at the Stadium of Light at 3 p.m on the second.

Speaking at his news conference ahead of Monday's Anfield clash with Manchester United, Klopp said: "I'm not too happy about this.

"We have less than 48 hours between our games against Man City and at Sunderland -- interesting idea. Less than 48 hours I cannot believe, with travelling and stuff.

"I don't know if we can do anything, but I learn more and more about this league and maybe we have to ask somebody if there would be another time for us at Sunderland.

"I understand -- 100 percent -- tradition. I would never say Boxing Day is not a good idea because I love it. It's Christmas time but I love it, I watched these games when I was not part of the Premier League.

"But to have a matchday with two days between? There should be another possibility."

Meanwhile, Klopp hit out at former Wales assistant manager Raymond Verheijen, who has regularly criticised his training methods and alleged that they cause injuries.

The Anfield manager said: "I only saw we have less than 48 hours between two games with travel.

"Then you [the media] say: 'Ah you didn't perform too well,' or 'injuries.. And then this Dutch guy, athletic coach, says the training is not too good. That's all.

"But how will you prepare teams for this? Do you say against Man City [play at] 50 percent because on Monday is Sunderland? How can I say that's no problem?

"Everybody is asking why England [in the] summer is not too successful in big tournaments.

"Ask what all the other teams are doing, or what all other countries are doing at this [Christmas] time. Ask them and you will see they have their legs on the sofa and [are] watching English football. That's what the big difference is."

Verheijen responded to Klopp's comments shortly after the news conference, claiming on Twitter that the former Borussia Dortmund manager had caused "20 hamstring injuries in 10 months" but blamed "external factors."

He followed that with another tweet that said: "The press conference by Liverpool coach Klopp is a great lesson for all coaches. Never let 'a Dutch guy' or anyone else get under your skin."
