Liverpool's outgoing chief executive officer Ian Ayre has been offered the chance to become general manager of German side TSV 1860 Munich, an Anfield source has told ESPN FC.
Ayre announced in March that he was set to leave his role on Merseyside in May 2017 and would take up a position at the German second-division outfit upon the expiration of his Reds' contract.
A source has told ESPN FC that Liverpool's owners Fenway Sports Group (FSG) are aware of the opportunity and have worked with Ayre to ensure that no conflict of interest or potential distraction is allowed to result from it.
TSV 1860 Munich's majority shareholder, Hasan Ismaik, is making a big push for the club to reach the Bundesliga and, while he did not identify Ayre, he said a new general manager would be appointed.
He told kicker: "He will join us from one of the biggest football clubs in the world.
"We want to get the best people to help us. Peter Cassalette [club president] and I have led the conversations with him. He is the right person for our future.
"When he found out about the tradition of the club, he was very enthusiastic."
He added: "He will begin his work by the end of this year or in the first quarter of 2017."
The 53-year-old made the call to step down from his position at Liverpool, despite being urged by FSG not to.
"If becoming chief executive of Liverpool Football Club was the greatest honour of my professional life, then deciding to step down at the end of my current contract is by far the most difficult," Ayre said in March.
"Having the privilege to lead this great club comes with huge responsibility and challenge but one which I have relished and I feel proud of my achievements in the role.
"Having been brought up in the shadow of Anfield, I have found it the most profound privilege to serve the club I have supported all my life.
"The driving principle behind every decision I have taken during my time here has been to do the best for the long-term stability and health of this great football club."
The boyhood Liverpool fan joined the club in 2007 as commercial director before he was promoted to managing director in 2011 and then CEO in 2013.
