Emre Can confident over Liverpool's chances this season

Emre Can says Liverpool must always aim to compete at the top and is confident about their chances this season.

Liverpool ended the 2015-16 campaign in eighth, missing out on European qualification, but the League Cup and Europa League finalists have cause for optimism for the new campaign.

Jurgen Klopp, who arrived in October last year, has refreshed the squad with the arrivals of players including Sadio Mane, Georginio Wijnaldum, Joel Matip, Ragnar Klavan and Loris Karius as well as having the chance to conduct the preseason preparations.

Can told Sport1 that Klopp has "big hopes" for this season and said: "We've made good signings, and did not lose many players. We've got a good squad with a good team spirit."

The Germany international hopes the absence of European football will give Liverpool a slight advantage in terms of the fixture list, although he admits they will still have "a lot of games" to play across the domestic competitions, and expects them to be competing among the top clubs again.

"That always has to be our goal," Can said.

Liverpool won their Premier League opener 4-3 away to Arsenal, and Can added: "It was important to make a good start and beat a direct competitor."

The 24-year-old came on as a substitute at Arsenal after having taken a longer break than most of his teammates following his participation in Euro 2016.

"I am not 100 percent. I need to achieve that, but I'm giving it my all in training," he said.
