Liverpool goalkeeper Simon Mignolet not distracted by Loris Karius rivalry

Simon Mignolet has said he is focusing only on himself as he looks to cement his place as Liverpool's first-choice goalkeeper.

Mignolet will be in possession of the No. 1 jersey for the Premier League opener at Arsenal and the first few weeks of the season after summer signing Loris Karius broke his hand during preseason.

But the Belgian stressed that his right to retain the starting spot would depend on his contributions on the pitch.

"In the end, it's all down to you," he told the club's official website. "You have to keep your head down, work hard and make sure you put in the performances yourself. You don't look over your shoulder to anybody else.

"It's about making sure you put in your own best possible performance every day on the training pitch and on a matchday."

Mignolet, heading into his fourth season as Liverpool player, believes the team can take advantage of a less hectic fixture list that comes without European football.

In his first season on Merseyside, Brendan Rodgers' team came agonisingly close to winning the 2013-14 Premier League title after capitalising on a lack of continental competition.

Mignolet hopes Liverpool can chase success again this time and wants to build on their runs to the League Cup and Europa League finals.

"I want to fight both in the Premier League and the domestic cups," the goalkeeper added.

"Liverpool have a history of winning trophies and playing in Europe. That's where we have to be again and we'll try to do that.

"I think the fact that we're not in Europe this year will get us in a better position for the Premier League games. That's a good thing.

"With the cups, last year we played in a final. Let's hope this year we can win one."
