Liverpool defender Joel Matip's ankle injury not serious - source

Joel Matip has given Liverpool a fitness boost after a scan on the defender's ankle revealed no serious damage, a source close to the club has confirmed to ESPN FC.

Cameroon international Matip, who arrived at the club on a free transfer from Schalke, limped out of Liverpool's 2-0 preseason friendly win over Wigan Athletic on Sunday.

However, the Liverpool Echo reported that a scan showed that the former Schalke man had just suffered bruising on his right foot and a club source has told ESPN FC that there is no long-term problem.

Liverpool are already without Mamadou Sakho and Joe Gomez for the start of the Premier League with the pair dealing with Achilles injuries, leaving Dejan Lovren and Matip as the only recognised available centre-backs at the club.

Speaking to a news conference after the Wigan friendly, manager Jurgen Klopp had said he was hopeful that Matip's injury would not mean he would miss action.

"I hope it's only a minor problem," Klopp said. "He said he's had it one or two times already. It's the foot he had problems with in the past and then he had a little bit of pain when preseason started because of the intensity.

"It's not too serious, hopefully. We had to make the decision of Joel or Dejan [Lovren]: Who has to play the whole 90 minutes? We decided on Joel. For him it was a little bit too much but he is in a good way, as you can see."

Meanwhile, Liverpool are close to completing the signing of Ragnar Klavan. A club source has told ESPN FC that the Augsburg defender is expected to undergo a medical on Tuesday ahead of his €5 million move.
