Liverpool's Joel Matip expects physical test in Premier League

New Liverpool centre-back Joel Matip has admitted that he will need to improve his fitness to keep up with the rigours of the Premier League.

The Cameroon international has moved to Anfield from Schalke on a free transfer during the summer and is looking to impress manager Jurgen Klopp in preseason training.

"I am ready for it [English football] but I also have work to do on my body," Matip told his club's official website.

"This is another league, so I will have to work on my body to play here and to be physically strong [enough] for the Premier League.

"I decided to do it myself, but I think the coaching staff and manager will help me reach this level and to be fit for the season.

"Of course, the Bundesliga is at a high level. Maybe it's a different level, but it's also a high level and I think I have got enough to play here."

The 24-year-old joins fellow Bundesliga export Loris Karius, as well as Sadio Mane and Marko Grujic, as one of the new faces in Klopp's Liverpool squad and said the decision to move to Anfield was an easy one.

"There were many points: the coach, the club, the supporters ... everything was good," he said.

"It was a good and simple decision for me. It's a great pleasure and honour to be a part of this big club."

Liverpool open their Premier League campaign away at Arsenal on August 13.
