Liverpool don't believe Joe Gomez injury is too serious - sources

Liverpool defender Joe Gomez will be assessed by the club's medical staff on Wednesday after suffering a knee injury while playing for the England under-21s, sources have told ESPN FC.

Gomez is thought to have tweaked a ligament in his right knee, but the injury is not thought to be too serious, sources said.

The 18-year-old was injured during the latter stages of his country's 3-0 victory over Kazakhstan in an Under-21 European Championship qualifier in Coventry on Tuesday.

Gomez, signed from Charlton in June, began the season as Liverpool's first-choice left-back, but lost his place to Alberto Moreno after a 3-1 Premier League defeat at Manchester United on Sept. 12.

The teenager has, though, featured in each of the club's last two Europa League games.

New Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp, who replaced the sacked Brendan Rodgers, has pledged to give the club's young players a chance.

Klopp's first match as manager is a league trip to Tottenham on Saturday. England under-21 manager Gareth Southgate has indicated that Gomez should be available for selection.

Southgate told reporters: "It seems to be OK. We were a bit concerned at first but we are hopeful it's nothing too serious."
