Brendan Rodgers: People don't want me at Liverpool; the hysteria is clear

Brendan Rodgers accused outsiders of trying to undermine him by claiming they are whipping up "hysteria" to try and get him sacked.

The under-pressure Liverpool manager recorded a first win in seven games as Aston Villa were defeated 3-2 on Saturday, and is confident he has his players' backing.

But he feels others are trying to destabilise him and the club, arguing that Liverpool's results compare favourably with those of many of their rivals.

"I am pretty confident that there is a group of people that don't want me here," he said in a news conference.

"In all competitions, we have lost less games than Manchester City, Chelsea and Arsenal. The hysteria around ourselves is interesting to note.

"We have lost two games, which is equivalent to Tottenham and Manchester United.

"Sometimes we haven't [even] lost games and the hysteria around it is pretty clear. There is maybe something else going on from behind."

Asked if he meant behind the scenes at Anfield, Rodgers said: "I am talking about people outside here. I never worried about the players. They have been absolutely brilliant.

"We are very much together as a team, and the supporters were fantastic today.

"As supporters and players, we got the victory. We are five points off the top and still with a lot of progress to make.''

Captain James Milner scored Liverpool's opener to open his account for the club before Daniel Sturridge -- on his second game back following a five-month lay-off -- scored twice to record his first goals since March.

"It is not rocket science," Rodgers said. "The last time we scored three goals was when he started against Tottenham [in March].

"If you want to compete at the top, you need quality. Daniel Sturridge has shown in his time he is a real top talent.

"I thought he was outstanding and was disappointed he didn't get a hat trick.

"His overall game and touch were outstanding and he had a great combination with Danny Ings. It was the first time they have started together, and they showed that understanding that good players have."

He was pleased, too, with summer signing Milner, adding: "He is a top-class professional. He came here with a much greater responsibility. It was only a matter of time before he got a goal, and it was a wonderful finish on his left foot."
