Liverpool deny Carlo Ancelotti contact as Rodgers' replacement - sources

Liverpool have made no approach to Carlo Ancelotti over the manager's job at Anfield despite reports that he had been sounded out to replace Brendan Rodgers, sources have told ESPN FC.

Sources say that the Reds have not contacted former Real Madrid boss Ancelotti or any other manager despite Rodgers being under pressure after a poor start to the season with Liverpool lying 13th in the Premier League.

Rodgers' side have not won any of their last five matches in league of cup competition, and were held 1-1 at home by newly promoted Norwich on Sunday.

Ancelotti, who has won three Champions League titles as a manager, is currently taking a break from football after being sacked by Real Madrid at the end of last season.

The Italian has also managed Juventus, AC Milan, Chelsea and Paris Saint-Germain.

He guided Chelsea to a Premier League and FA Cup double in 2010, and led Madrid as they became the first club to be crowned champions of Europe for a 10th time in 2014.

Rodgers, who joined Liverpool from Swansea in June 2012, acknowledged in May that his job could be under threat after the Reds collected just eight points from their final nine league matches to miss out on Champions League qualification.

However, he retained his position following an end-of-season review by club owners Fenway Sports Group in the summer.

Assistant manager Colin Pascoe and first-team coach Mike Marsh left Anfield instead, to be replaced by Sean O'Driscoll and Gary McAllister.

McAllister believes the criticism from fans regarding the club's poor form is a good thing, saying: "That's got to be the driving force for players and they've got to put that right."
