Jordan Henderson: Liverpool have 'got to move on' from Steve Gerrard exit

New Liverpool captain Jordan Henderson says the club must move on from the Steven Gerrard era in order to progress.

Henderson has taken over the role Gerrard vacated when he ended his 17-year Anfield first-team career at the end of last season to join Major League Soccer club LA Galaxy.

The 25-year-old has nothing but praise for the influence Gerrard has had on Liverpool, citing him as a "role model" and a "great leader."

But Henderson, who was vice-captain last season, is adamant that he will not allow his predecessor to cast a shadow as he bids to lead the Reds back to success.

Speaking at a news conference in Kuala Lumpur, where Liverpool face a Malaysia XI on Friday, Henderson said: "I think that last season was good preparation for me. I was vice captain, and led the side when Stevie wasn't there.

"Learning from a leader and a role model like Stevie helped me a lot. But I don't really think about taking over from Stevie too much.

"He was a great leader but we've got to move on from that. I will just try to do the best I can, as I did when I led the side last season.

"The biggest thing for me since being given the captaincy is making sure that everything surrounding the team is perfect. I hope we can have a successful season."
