Martin Skrtel unhappy with Liverpool contract offer, calls it 'unacceptable'

Liverpool defender Martin Skrtel described his new contract offer from the club as "unacceptable", while adding that the reason the club struggled this season was the loss of Luis Suarez.

Skrtel was quoted by Slovakian website Akualne in an interview that casts doubt over his future with the Anfield club. He suggested he is frustrated by the terms of the new deal he has been offered by Liverpool, with the 30-year-old's current deal set to expire in the summer of 2016.

"It's unacceptable for me," Skrtel said when asked about the contract offer that has been presented to him by Liverpool.

"I think that contracts like this offered to players who are much older than me or the player who had some health problems.

"The contract which has been offered to me is unacceptable, so I did not sign it. I have one year left and there has been some speculation about the interest from other clubs. We will see what happens."

Skrtel's discontent with the terms of the deal being offered to him by Liverpool could surprise many of the club's supporters. The Slovakian central defender is now one of the more senior players in Brendan Rodgers' squad following the departure of long-time captain Steven Gerrard.

As he reflected on the season that ended with Liverpool in sixth place in the Premier League, Skrtel admitted his side had fallen well short of their ambitions.

"We failed because we did not meet the targets we have set," added the Slovakian international. "If we finish in fifth or sixth, it does not matter, we would still not qualified for the Champions League.

"The significant factor was the exit of Luis Suarez [to Barcelona last summer] and too many errors on the field. The squad was big enough.

"New players arrived and it is not always easy to acclimatize with the new club, so the first half of the season was difficult. The second part has been improved, but the conclusion was we did not reach our targets."

Skrtel's comments back in his homeland look certain to resonate with Liverpool officials. The Anfield club have reportedly decided to back manager Rodgers despite a disappointing season that ended with a 6-1 defeat at Stoke last month.
