Liverpool must replace Steven Gerrard with 'quality' - Brendan Rodgers

Brendan Rodgers has said Liverpool face a challenge in finding players capable of filling the void left by captain Steven Gerrard.

Gerrard, 34, played his final game at Anfield on Saturday as Liverpool lost 3-1 to Crystal Palace, before the midfielder heads for the LA Galaxy in the summer.

Rodgers had to contend with the sale of Luis Suarez to Barcelona last summer and now he must plan how best to cope with Gerrard, who has made 465 Premier League appearances for the Reds, leaving for MLS.

"Stevie had a huge influence in the changing room and that will be missed," said Rodgers, whose side have missed out Champions League qualification this season.

"But there is now an opportunity; if you want to be the big player and you want to play for the big club then you have to stand up and show that in big games you can make big contributions.

"We've got players here with good character and if we can throw in quality with that then that will be important for us.

Rodgers added: "Losing Gerrard, [Luis] Suarez and [Jamie] Carragher is an incredible wealth of experience, game-management and quality going out of the team and that's something we will find, I'm sure.

"We've got to plot a way to improve collectively and our job in the summer is to find the players who can make a difference for us."
