Brendan Rodgers: Raheem Sterling 'not going anywhere in the summer'

Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers says forward Raheem Sterling will not be going anywhere this summer after discussions over a new contract reached an impasse.

The 20-year-old has been made what Rodgers described as "an incredible offer," believed to be £100,000-a-week, but negotiations have stalled. The England international's current deal runs until 2017, and the club want to extend it until 2020.

Sterling admitted on Wednesday that all the speculation over his new deal has been "a bit much" for him this season and he wants to focus on football, although he added that he was flattered to have been linked with Arsenal.

Rodgers addressed the media at his prematch news conference on Thursday and said about Sterling: "Concentration should be on his football. If his ambition is to win trophies that's aligned with what we do here. Raheem has two-and-a-half years left on his deal and he's not going anywhere in the summer."

Rodgers added: "This is one of the superpowers of football. The owners have made it clear, and we've seen it before, that money doesn't come into it.

"If the club don't want to sell, they won't sell. It's as simple as that. Money has never been the objective here for the club. If any player ever left here, whether it was Raheem or whoever, it would always be on the terms of the club. But that's a long way off.

"For us, it's about continuing the nurturing and development of a young player who's made huge strides and someone we believe we still have a lot of input into his development to come, so he can consistently be a player who is performing at the very top of his game."

Rodgers went on to say that Sterling made a "mistake" in conducting a television interview about his contract stand-off without the club's permission.

Sterling confirmed in a BBC interview released on Wednesday that he has turned down an offer of £100,000 a week -- a significant increase on the £35,000 a week he currently earns.

In his interview, which the BBC obtained without going through the club, Sterling insisted that he is not motivated by greed. However, Rodgers thinks the decision to speak publicly about his contract talks was misguided.

Rodgers said: "There was no permission from the club. It was something that surprised us all, to be honest. But he's a young player who's still learning and developing, on and off the field, and sometimes you'll make mistakes as a youngster.

"Our relationship is strong, which is important. He knows I'm working in the best interests of the club and for him. Our focus is on improving his development.

"He will learn as time goes on, as we all do. You make mistakes in your life, especially when you're young. But he's very much focused on his football now, and that's the message."
