FA charges Liverpool's Martin Skrtel over apparent stamp on David De Gea

Liverpool defender Martin Skrtel has been charged by the Football Association for an alleged stamp on Manchester United goalkeeper David De Gea.

Skrtel appeared to commit the offence in stoppage time at the end of Sunday's Premier League match, won 2-1 by Man United.

Neither referee Martin Atkinson nor his assistants spotted the incident at the time, allowing the FA to take retrospective action based on television footage.

The FA confirmed it has charged Skrtel with violent conduct, and that he has until 6 p.m. UK time on Tuesday to respond.

An FA statement read: "In Premier League matches, if an incident has not been seen by the match officials, a three-man panel of former elite officials will be asked by the FA to review the footage independently of each other.

"They will then advise what, if any action, they believe the match referee should have taken had it been witnessed at the time.

"For an FA charge to follow, all three panel members must agree it is a sending-off offence.

"In this instance, the decision by the panel was unanimous."

If he is found guilty, Skrtel would face a three-match ban, ruling him out of the Premier League matches against Arsenal and Newcastle and the FA Cup quarterfinal replay at Blackburn.

The Reds will already have to cope without Steven Gerrard, who was sent off less than a minute after coming on as a half-time substitute for a stamp on Ander Herrera.

The defeat left Liverpool five points behind their opponents in the race for a top-four finish.
