Liverpool set to open contract talks with Martin Skrtel - sources

Liverpool are preparing to open talks with defender Martin Skrtel over a new contract, sources have told ESPN FC.

The Slovakia international's current deal runs until June 2016, and the club are seeking to extend it.

Skrtel has impressed manager Brendan Rodgers with the way he has responded over the last season-and-a-half after a poor run of form that led to him being dropped.

The 30-year-old has since become a key figure in Liverpool's defence, and has made clear that he is happy at Anfield.

Skrtel, a 6.5 million-pound purchase from Zenit St Petersburg in January 2008, signed his most recent contract in 2012.

He struggled for form after Rodgers that summer, though, losing his place to Jamie Carragher in January 2013.

Skrtel became so frustrated that he admitted to considering his Anfield future at the end of Rodgers' first season. But the club rejected an approach from Napoli, and the defender has since regained a regular place in the side.

With Dejan Lovren yet to establish himself since a 20 million-pound move from Southampton in July 2014, Skrtel has effectively become Liverpool's first-choice central defender.

He marked the seventh anniversary of his arrival at the club on Sunday, posting a message on his website in which he said: "It is a great honour for me to play seven years for Liverpool. We had some great moments together and I am really happy that I am part of this all. Liverpool is now in my heart."

The Reds, meanwhile, have confirmed that winger Oussama Assaidi has left the club to join Al-Ahli in Dubai.

Sources told ESPN FC on Monday that Assaidi, 26, had agreed a three-year deal to move to the Middle East.
