Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard is set to announce he will leave the club at the end of this season, sources confirmed to ESPN FC.
The 34-year-old is expected to go public with his plans on Friday, sources said, as he looks to end an Anfield first-team career stretching back to 1998.
Multiple English newspapers reported the news of Gerrard's imminent announcement earlier Thursday night.
With his current Reds deal set to expire this summer, Gerrard became free to sign a pre-contract agreement with an overseas club on Thursday.
Gerrard, who ruled out retirement earlier this season, has reportedly attracted interest from MLS clubs in the United States, although he has yet to decide where he will play next.
The midfielder is on the short list of the MLS champion LA Galaxy's potential targets, a source confirmed to ESPN FC's Jeff Carlisle.
"[Gerrard] was one of several in the discussion of a good addition if possible," the source said.
While MLS operates under a salary cap structure, each club has three Designated Player spots which they can use to sign high-priced stars.
The Galaxy already have Republic of Ireland striker Robbie Keane and U.S. defender Omar Gonzalez as two of their DPs, but the third slot came available when American star Landon Donovan retired last month.
Manager Brendan Rodgers said on Wednesday that he had accepted the possibility of his captain talking to clubs about a move abroad.
Rodgers revealed at the beginning of December that the Reds had offered Gerrard a new deal, but the player indicated that he wanted time to consider his future.
The midfielder, who has been with Liverpool since he was eight years old, is third on the club's all-time appearance list, having played 695 times for them in a little over 16 years.
He led the club to the Champions League in 2005, scoring his side's first as they came back from three goals down to beat AC Milan on penalties after a 3-3 draw.
Gerrard has also won two FA Cups, three League Cups and the UEFA Cup during his time at Anfield.
