Brendan Rodgers says Liverpool 'did enough to win' vs. Man United

Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers claimed his side "did enough to win the game" despite their 3-0 defeat to Manchester United at Old Trafford.

Goals from Wayne Rooney, Juan Mata and Robin van Persie sealed victory but it was United goalkeeper David De Gea who took the plaudits after keeping Liverpool at bay from a host of chances.

"I thought we did enough to win the game," Rodgers told Sky Sports 1. "We created enough chances to win the game but we also made defensive mistakes.

"It probably epitomised our season, we're not prolific enough in terms of goalscoring. I think David De Gea was man of the match, that doesn't surprise me. I've seen him have four or five games like that.

"The first half we were the better side but we can't concede the goals we did. We nearly went in front and they broke up the other end and got a goal, we lost a runner from midfield which you can't do.

"It's easy, we know what the solutions are but we have to keep working and hopefully the confidence will return. At least we created the opportunities and if we can cut out the mistakes we're going to be in with a chance of winning more games."

The Northern Irishman almost guided Liverpool to the Premier League title last year, but they are now 10th, some 18 points shy of leaders Chelsea.

Rodgers spent 117 million pounds on nine players in the summer, but they have not gelled. The Reds were knocked out of the Champions League after just one victory in the group stages and it will take an almighty improvement if they are to play in Europe's top club competition next season.

Rodgers conceded after the final whistle that his squad lack the cohesion and spirit that took them a whisker away from their first title in 24 years last term.

"The whole scenario was about looking to build a team again. We want to recapture the team ethos,'' the Liverpool boss said. "We had a team that was growing for a couple of years and has changed with injuries.''

Rodgers also denied he was managing a fractured dressing room.

"I wouldn't tell you anyway," he said. "Internally it will always stay within. Every dressing room will always have issues but in my time it has never been the case. There is nothing of note. The players are real good honest players. There is honesty there but they are just not getting results."

Liverpool's Glen Johnson, meanwhile, faces a spell on the sidelines after suffering what he said was a groin muscle tear in the first half.
