Glen Johnson relaxed over new Liverpool contract

Liverpool defender Glen Johnson insists he is relaxed about his contract situation and is more than willing to remain at Anfield.

The England right-back is into the final 12 months of his existing deal and talks over a new one reached an impasse late last season.

It is believed Liverpool wanted to re-sign Johnson, who turned 30 last weekend, but on reduced terms. When no agreement could be reached with the defender on lowering his salary below its reported £110,000-a-week, talks were stopped and have not since resumed.

Come January, Johnson would be free to speak to foreign clubs but he stressed he was only focused on his immediate future.

"There are no talks going on with the club at the moment but I'm very relaxed about the situation with my contract," he said. Asked if he turned down a contract last season he added: "No, there were minor talks but nothing else. In January I could (talk to other clubs), but I'll worry about that when January comes."

"At the minute I'm playing for Liverpool and I'm happy here. I'm more than willing to stay. I've loved playing my football here and day one but obviously I can only talk to the club about it when they want to speak to me."

"I'll just concentrate on things week by week."

Glen Johnson isn't worried about his place at Liverpool despite some summer signings at full-back.

This summer Liverpool signed youngster Javier Manquillo on a two-year loan from Atletico Madrid but there is the possibility that deal could be made permanent should he impress.

Manquillo may get his chance to stake a claim for a regular place at right-back this weekend as Johnson was forced off with a thigh injury late in Liverpool's 3-1 defeat at Manchester City on Monday, which resulted in them finishing the game with 10 men as they had used all their substitutes.

But Johnson insists not securing a new contract is not unsettling.

"The manager has picked me so far. That shows he wants me here," he added.
