Liverpool's Agger 'perfect for Barca'

Liverpool academy chief Rodolfo Borrell, a former Barcelona youth coach, has said Reds defender Daniel Agger would fit in perfectly at the Camp Nou.

Daniel Agger: The right choice for Barca.
Agger has the right attributes for Barca, says Rodolfo Borrell

Barca are on the lookout for a new centre-half this summer with Carles Puyol again injured - and, with apparent first choice Thiago Silva seeming set to stay at Paris Saint-Germain, have cast their net wider to include Agger, 28, and Valencia’s Jeremy Mathieu.

Borrell told Catalan radio station SER Esports, in comments reported by Mundo Deportivo, that Denmark international Agger’s had all the necessary qualities.

"Agger has the right characteristics to adapt to Barca’s play,” he explained. “He is a very trustworthy centre-half, above all on the ball, because he comes out very well with it.

“In a style like Barca’s, a defender must have a good pass, make the right decisions, be quick when the team loses the ball and good in the air at set-pieces both in defence and attack. Agger fulfils all these qualities.”

Given that Barca coach Tito Vilanova’s current centre-half options - including Gerard Pique, Javier Mascherano and Carles Puyol - are right-footers, signing a left-footed player such as Agger would make sense, Borrell said.

"At Barca, where all the centre-backs are right-footed, to have a lefty would make it much easier to bring the ball out,” he added.

Speculation also continues that Liverpool goalkeeper Pepe Reina could move to the Camp Nou as a replacement for Victor Valdes.

Although Valdes’ announcement that he hoped to stay and see out the last 12 months of his contract made a move appear less likely, reports that Liverpool are close to signing Belgium international Simon Mignolet from Sunderland have cranked up the rumour mill again.

Reina told AS that, as far as he was concerned, his situation had not yet altered.

“The thing is very clear,” he said. “I have a contract with Liverpool and, at the moment, there will be no changes.”
