Liga MX W2W4 - America, Santos Laguna, Cruz Azul vie for first place

A battered Estadio Azteca hosts Club America and Tijuana

You don't expect to talk about the state of a pitch as the main storyline for a mid-season Liga MX game. Unfortunately, the horrendous work done on the Estadio Azteca pitch, spearheaded by a Costa Rican company last summer, has yielded more than its share of controversy for producing subpar conditions this season. Just when it looked like the pitch had recovered, a Shakira concert earlier this week held on the stadium grass has left it reeling...

Mexico's Victor Guzman, Raul Gudino stake their claims for starting spots

Herculez Gomez examines the state of the Mexican national team, which is experimenting with a new generation while also searching for a head coach.

The international break is now officially over for Mexico. Following a 3-2 win over Costa Rica last week, and a 1-0 loss to Chile on Tuesday night, El Tri has emerged from the October friendlies with a number of lessons learned.

With a focus on those last two matches, here is the latest Mexico hot-list:

Victor Guzman, MF, Pachuca

Why he's here: In the recent search for the next generation of Mexican talent, Guzman easily stood out amongst his peers. During the victory against Costa Rica,...

Hirving Lozano not the only young talent set to lead Mexico forward

MEXICO CITY -- At one point during Tuesday night's 1-0 loss to Chile, Hirving Lozano flew down the wing to recover a ball one of his teammates had lost far up the field. Minutes later, he was marking Alexis Sanchez as the Manchester United star attempted to create a chance for his country. Later in the match, Lozano paired with Jesus Gallardo to pressure Chile into turning the ball over in their defensive third.

For most of the match in Queretaro, Mexico's best player was also their most industrious.

Ricardo Ferretti lauds Mexico youngsters: '80 percent of them will be in next World Cup'

After Mexico's 1-0 loss to Chile in Queretaro on Tuesday night, interim Mexico manager Ricardo Ferretti was mostly complimentary of his young group of players.

The Brazilian-born boss believes the home team had more scoring chances than their opponents did, though mistakes up front prevented El Tri from getting on the board.

"We're talking about a new generation of young players and naturally, we have to think they can make mistakes and have ups and downs like any youngster," Ferretti said in the...

Mexico's Hugo Gonzalez 7/10 for solid saves in loss to Chile

Following last week's 3-2 win over Costa Rica, Mexico wrapped up the international break with a 1-0 friendly loss to Chile on Tuesday night. Despite Mexico's promising start to the clash, which included a few dangerous opportunities, Chile eventually took charge with a late resurgence that helped secure a goal in the 89th minute by Nicolas Castillo.

Positives

Throughout the entire first half, Mexico looked much proactive and energetic than Chile when it came to the attack. With more possession and...
