'Winner' Landon Donovan's arrival a boost to Club Leon - Fernandez

Landon Donovan is "a winner" who will make a big contribution to Club Leon, sporting director Rodrigo Fernandez has said.

The signing of U.S. legend Donovan, announced on Friday, was the surprise of the Liga MX January transfer window.

The 35-year-old came out of retirement to sign for Leon and is due to be officially presented at Estadio Leon at 9 p.m. local time on Monday. His No. 20 shirt is on sale at the club shop.

"It wasn't easy [to bring him to Club Leon], but the fact he was here in Leon helped us a lot," Fernandez said on Saturday.

"He got to know the city, the stadium, some of the facilities this great club has, and that helped persuade him.

"With the mentality he has he is coming to contribute. He's a winner, and he's coming to produce."

Leon manager Gustavo Diaz said after Saturday's match that the fact Donovan has not played since 2016 presented a challenge he was looking forward to.

"Personally, it is a great honour to manage great players and Donovan is an excellent footballer," Diaz told a news conference.

"It's a special situation and we hope to be up to the task and be able to extract a little more of his quality."

Club Leon's U.S. goalkeeper William Yarbrough told Medio Tempo: "I'm proud to be Landon Donovan's teammate.

"Our job is to help him get up to speed quickly. This type of player coming is very welcome."

Leon have got off to a perfect start to the 2018 Clausura and sit top of the league with six points from two matches.
