America extends undefeated run; Monterrey rocked by Necaxa

Andre-Pierre Gignac's double put Tigres back on track as one of the favorites for the title.

It's been a whirlwind last 10 days in Liga MX, with each team playing three games in the 2018 Clausura. Round eight this past weekend took us to the brink of the halfway point of the regular season. Here's what we learned:

1. Late Valdez strike extends America's undefeated run

Bruno Valdez netted in second-half injury time to rescue a point for Club America on Sunday against Veracruz. With a 1-1 draw, Las Aguilas maintained their record as the only team this Clausura not to suffer defeat.

Gonzalez in battle for Monterrey spot; Pachuca can pile on Chivas

Jonathan Gonzalez is battling Monterrey teammate Arturo Gonzalez for his starting spot.

ESPN FC's Liga MX writers pick out what you need to watch for in another exciting weekend of action.

Mexican midfielders fighting for Monterrey starts

Monterrey midfielder Arturo "Ponchito" Gonzalez may just go on to have the brightest career of all the winner from Mexico's 2011 Under-17 World Cup team. And while Juan Carlos Osorio's squad appears to be largely decided for the World Cup this summer, the form of the 23-year-old, former Atlas player will surely be catching the national team...

Chivas struggles to convert, weakness to crosses cause woeful slump

Chivas are having some bad luck but finishing their chances should see them climb the table again.

A second-half, injury-time goal from Alan Pulido rescued a tie for Chivas against Queretaro in Liga MX on Wednesday, ending the Guadalajara club's run of three consecutive defeats. The point from the 2-2 draw was construed as a positive for the institution and understandably so, given that Queretaro had gone 2-1 up in the 88th minute through a Miguel Martinez header.

"I think the point is positive in many ways," said Chivas coach Matias Almeyda after the game. "I admire the reaction of my players...

Leon's struggles could leave Donovan short of chances to achieve Liga MX dream

Landon Donovan
Leon's struggles could mean Landon Donovan's Liga MX dream could become a nightmare.

Since joining Liga MX a month ago, Landon Donovan's Club Leon has won just once in its past seven matches.

To make matters worse, its past three defeats have been absolute routs. Leon has conceded 14 goals and scored just two. Donovan himself has not been particularly privy to the defeats -- the only minutes he's played for his new club came in a 2-1 win over Puebla -- but the hole Los Esmeraldas have dug themselves seems too big for the American legend to fill at this point.

Caixinha's time at Cruz Azul more peaceful, but not running smoothly

Pedro Caixinha's Cruz Azul have not scored in three home games and are languishing in 14th place.

MEXICO CITY -- At this stage last season, Cruz Azul was still unbeaten in the 2017 Apertura, with two wins and four draws. The club had scored eight goals and conceded five. However, the ambiance around the club wasn't peaceful. Paco Jemez's constant confrontations with the Mexican press during his news conferences continued even when Cruz Azul was in third place after six weeks of play.

This season, under Pedro Caixinha's watch, Cruz Azul has already lost twice and is currently in 14th place, but...
