Hat trick hero Jamie Vardy hails Leicester after win over Man City

Jamie Vardy praised Leicester City's fighting spirit as his hat trick helped the Premier League champions beat Manchester City 4-2 on Saturday.

Vardy, 29, ended a 10-game run without a top-flight goal after just three minutes against City, and Andy King made it 2-0 in the fifth minute.

The England striker scored another before half-time and completed his hat trick with 12 minutes left on the clock, before City netted consolations though Aleksandar Kolarov and Nolito.

After securing a first Premier League win since October, Vardy told BT Sport: "We wanted to make sure we were competitive today and see the team fighting for the cause and we have done that.

"We will get back on training pitch and look forward to the next game."

King added: "Today was about getting back to basics getting in people's faces, playing a high tempo.

"We owed the club and one to do it against such a good team was good. We know we have been better than what we have showed."

Leicester boss Claudio Ranieri said his players were determined to right their recent wrongs, with the club currently 14th in the table after claiming glory last season.

The Italian said: "Because of the last matches we have played, my players wanted to react and show a very good performance.

"In Porto we made a bad performance and the result was a shame and today we wanted to react against a big team.

"It was important to score very, very soon [early]. The guys got more confident but we can only be happy until tomorrow morning. For us it was a very, very important three points.

"Champions react at the right moment ... we can do something good when we are strong and a team. I hope now we can find the same level as last season.

"We can't win all our matches but we can fight in all our matches and work so hard to defend the title.

"The next matches are very important because we are in the relegation battle. I said [to the players] I need warriors and they showed me what I wanted to see.''
