Leganes coach Asier Garitano 'not thinking of losing' vs. Barcelona

The coach of newly promoted Leganes, Asier Garitano, wants his players to believe in themselves and prove they can beat the best on Saturday when hosting defending champions Barcelona.

Barca gave a ferocious response to their surprise 2-1 league loss to Alaves last weekend -- their first home defeat since April -- when they romped to a 7-0 victory over Celtic Glasgow at the Camp Nou in their Champions League group opener on Tuesday.

Barca travel to Leganes with their star-studded attacking trio of Lionel Messi, Luis Suarez and Neymar expected to start together in La Liga for the first time this season.

"I have no fear," Garitano told AS. "I have all the respect in the world but I'm not thinking of losing. The idea of losing by a big margin is simply not there. The plan is to be closer to winning the game than losing it."

Garitano says man-marking Lionel Messi is out of the question.

"All the rivals have tried everything and hardly any has been able to stop him," he said. "We haven't so far tried to man-mark but the problem is not just Messi at Barcelona but everyone else.

"[Andres] Iniesta makes everyone that plays with him better. It's out of the ordinary. I always loved those players that are not just individually good but that they improve the team."

Garitano says he would have preferred to have faced Barca under different circumstances.

"Barca's defeat to Alaves wasn't good for us because it cancelled out the psychological factor of a possible relaxation from a top team that arrives to play against us," he said. "Had Alaves not won that game, it would be easier for us to pull a surprise.

"On the other hand, the fact that Alaves won means that nothing is impossible."

Garitano has proved that during his three years in charge of Leganes. The 46-year-old steered the club to gain promotion to the Segunda Division in his first campaign in charge (2013-14).

More impressive was Leganes finishing second last season to earn a place in La Liga for the first time in the club's 88-year history.

Garitano's men have enjoyed a strong start to the campaign, winning 1-0 at Celta Vigo before holding Atletico Madrid to a goalless draw.

The Madrid outfit lost their first game of the campaign on Sunday when they fell 2-1 at Sporting Gijon.

"The most important thing is to believe you can do it," said Garitano, a former striker who spent the majority of his playing career in the Segunda Division.

"The most important thing above the tactical work is to convince the players that they can win. To convince the fans, we all have to believe it's possible."

Convincing his son, a fervent Barca fan, will be more challenging.

"I don't want to even talk to him this week," Garitano said. "The day we gained promotion he already told me that we would struggle against Barca. I think he may not want us to lose now but I don't even want to know."
