Leeds slam Becchio for transfer request

Leeds United have criticised top scorer Luciano Becchio after he submitted a transfer request, saying the striker wants to leave Elland Road to make more money.

 Luciano Becchio's future looks unclear

Becchio, already Leeds’ best-paid player, handed in the request on Thursday after talks over a new contract with the club broke down.

Later on Thursday, Leeds - who have rejected offers from two foreign clubs for the player - accused Becchio of making unreasonable demands.

The club said in a statement: "Luciano Becchio financially believes his best interests are served by a move away from Leeds United. The player will only be allowed to leave in the event that an acceptable offer is received.

"The club have sought to agree the terms of a new contract with the player, who is already the highest earner, but the requested terms were beyond a level that we could support, particularly in view of the regulations relating to Financial Fair Play that will be effective in coming seasons.

"It is disappointing that this situation has occurred when he is under contract until 30th June 2014.”

Becchio has scored 86 goals in four-and-a-half years at Elland Road, including 19 this season, and was also linked with Wigan, although manager Roberto Martinez downplayed talk of a move for the former Merida player.
