Suzuki Cup winners Thailand get red carpet reception in Bangkok

AFF Suzuki Cup champions Thailand were given a red carpet reception when they returned home to Bangkok following their record-equalling fourth ASEAN title win after Saturday's final against Malaysia at Kuala Lumpur's Bukit Jalil National Stadium.

Kiatisuk Senamuang's side ended a 12-year title drought as they prevailed 4-3 on aggregate against Malaysia in the two-legged final, home and away.

The War Elephants were accorded a victory parade in an open-top bus which meandered its way from Don Muang airport to the National Stadium in downtown Bangkok, greeted by cheering and flag-waving fans.

The parade was broadcast live by local television channels. Social media platforms were buzzing with fans uploading pictures of the celebration.

"It is amazing, unbelievable," Thailand midfielder Charyl Chappuis told the official tournament website. "It is a lot crazier than when I won the FIFA Under-17 World Cup with Switzerland," added the 22-year-old Swiss-Thai star of Suphanburi who scored his team's opening goal in Saturday's second leg final.

Thailand coach Kiatisuk Senamuang -- who became the first man in tournament history to win the tournament as a player and coach -- lifted the trophy aloft to huge cheers from the crowd as the bus entered the National Stadium complex which houses the headquarters of the Football Association of Thailand.

"This group of players is even better than the team I played for," said 41-year-old Kiatisuk, who featured in the 1996, 2000 and 2002 title winning sides. "They have everything required to achieve more success."

Former striker Kiatisuk -- who took charge of the national team in September -- scored over 60 international goals in over 100 appearances for Thailand.
