Tottenham head coach Mauricio Pochettino is keen to keep Andros Townsend despite interest from Southampton.

ESPN FC reported on Sunday that Southampton had contacted Spurs to assess the availability of England winger Townsend, but Pochettino told the media on Wednesday he is determined to retain the 23-year-old.

"He is in my plans," Pochettino said.

The Argentine also said striker Roberto Soldado, who has been linked with a move back to his native Spain, has a role to play this season.

"It is impossible you play or have in the squad only 11 players," he said. "You need 24 or 25 players. It is only 11 in each game as after that another three impact players come in.

"I think we have to play a lot of games and it is possible you play tomorrow, then don't play in the next Premier League game, but the most important thing is understanding that we need to choose for the games.

"We have an unbelievable squad and my job is not only to put my philosophy in the club or on the pitch on how we need to play, but I need choice and that is my job."

Pochettino confirmed that Townsend will return to the Tottenham ranks for the second leg of their Europa League playoff against AEL Limassol on Thursday night at White Hart Lane after leaving him out of the squad for the Premier League game against Queens Park Rangers at the weekend.

Soldado will miss the Limassol clash with neck and back injuries, while Kyle Naughton is available again after missing the QPR clash due to suspension.
