Sources: Man Utd near Di Maria deal

Manchester United are on the brink of signing Angel Di Maria from Real Madrid, sources in Spain and England have told ESPN, although the final details of the transfer must still be agreed.

The purchase of the Argentine World Cup star would represent a significant coup for United, and likely break their transfer record by a considerable distance.

Real Madrid have agreed to the sale of Di Maria, sources say, but they are still holding out for a fee of close to 70 million euros -- around 56 million pounds. That would be almost 20 million pounds more than the 37.1 million paid to Chelsea for Juan Mata in January.

Sources also said that United have offered Di Maria by far the best wage package of all his suitors, including Paris Saint-Germain.

The French club pulled out of the pursuit two weeks ago, as they couldn't make any prospective deal meet Financial Fair Play requirements. Although Di Maria did want to remain in the Champions League, he has been persuaded of the benefits of a move to Old Trafford.

The winger asked to leave Real in midweek, as it became clear president Florentino Perez wants to sell after bringing in James Rodriguez from Monaco.

There is also confidence that United can sign Daley Blind from Ajax, while manager Louis van Gaal remains in the hunt for another midfielder.
