Bert van Marwijk in South Korea frame

Bert van Marwijk watches on as Hamburg lose to Eintracht Braunschweig.
Bert van Marwijk could be the next coach of South Korea.

Former Netherlands coach Bert van Marwijk is holding talks about taking over as the new boss of South Korea, the head of the Korean FA's technical committee has said.

- Duerden: Hong Myung-bo resignation was inevitable

Reuters reported that Van Marwijk, who coached the Dutch to the 2010 World Cup final in South Africa, could succeed Hong Myung-bo, who resigned after the South Koreans' poor World Cup campaign this summer.

Lee Yong-soo told reporters in Seoul that he had held talks with Van Marwijk, whose most recent coaching post was at Bundesliga strugglers Hamburg last season.

"I met with coach Van Marwijk and heard from him that he is interested in South Korea's football team," Lee said.

"We talked for an hour and 50 minutes... there was no concrete result, but we've confirmed his interest."

Last week, Lee -- who said discussions with Van Marwijk would conclude next week -- revealed that the South Korean football authorities had a shortlist of three candidates, all from overseas, to take over as national team boss.

South Korea hope to have the new coach in place by the time they play friendlies against Venezuela and Uruguay in September.

The South Koreans struggled badly at the World Cup in Brazil, picking up only one point as they were eliminated in the knockout stages.
