Claudio Ranieri has claimed a difference of opinion over the direction Monaco's future should take led to him leaving the club.
Ranieri steered the principality side out of Ligue 2 then guided them to runners-up spot behind Paris Saint-Germain last season.
Though he still had a year left on his contract at the Stade Louis II, Ranieri was replaced by Leonardo Jardim earlier in the summer.
The Italian told Gazzetta dello Sport he and Russian billionaire president Dmitri Rybolovlev and his advisors no longer saw eye-to-eye on where the club should be heading.
"There was no longer agreement on the projects," said Ranieri, who was appointed by Greece earlier this month. "I had asked for three or four players to improve, and the president saw things differently. Afterwards, I understood why: he sold [James] Rodriguez, perhaps also [Yannick] Ferreira-Carrasco and [Radamel] Falcao.
"We couldn't compete with PSG. For the French critics, there were two or three teams better than us, but we finished second. I couldn't ask for more."
