Marco Andreolli struck the crossbar on Inter's fourth spot kick, the only miss of nine attempts as United won 5-3 on spot-kicks.

United created the majority of chances throughout regulation time, in a match between two traditional European powers both looking to rebound from sub-par seasons last year.

Inter finished fifth in their 2013-14 Serie A campaign, while United was seventh a year after winning the Premier League in manager Alex Ferguson's final season.

Phil Jones came closest to opening the scoring, forcing Samir Handanovic to make a sprawling save in the 11th minute.

The game attracted a crowd of 61,238, and most wore Manchester United's Red and White. But the loudest ovation during pregame introductions went to Inter Milan defender Nemanja Vidic, who joined the squad this season after eight-and-a-half years with United.

Elsewhere, Francesco Totti led AS Roma to 1-0 victory over Real Madrid at Dallas' Cotton Bowl Arena.

The Roma legend, who is entering his 23rd season with the Giallorossi, swept home an Alessandro Florenzi cross after playing the young midfielder through with a sublime dummy in the 50th minute.

Real Madrid had their chances throughout a unusually spiteful match, with Welsh superstar Gareth Bale sending their best goalscoring chance wide in the 20th minute.

Stoke's tour of Germany concluded with a 2-1 defeat against Bundesliga side Schalke.

Bojan Krkic, newly arrived from Barcelona, gave the Potters the lead in the 55th minute with his first goal for the new club.

Asmir Begovic player in his first friendly since the World Cup, but he could not prevent Schalke's Joel Matip from equalising three minutes later, and Tranquillo Barnetta from winning it in the 85th minute.

QPR settled for a 2-2 draw against Leyton Orient. Rangers fell behind to Romain Vincelot's header in the first half, though Junior Hoilett was able to equalise.

Joey Barton's free-kick gave QPR the lead just after halftime before Leyton's Dean Cox evened the score six minutes from time.

Sunderland opened a two-match tour of Portugal with a 1-0 victory over Spanish side Recreativo de Huelca.

Mikael Mandron converted a penalty for the Black Cats after Charis Mavrias was pulled down in the box.

Josh Brownhill's last-minute free-kick doomed Burnley to a 2-1 defeat away to Preston North End.

New signing Lukas Jutkiewicz scored for Burnley, but Alan Browne equalised for Preston at the start of the second half before Brownhill's winner.

Swansea City featured 21 players in a 2-0 victory over Exeter City.

Bafetimbi Gomis finished off a Neil Taylor cross in the first half, and Josh Sheehan finished off a pass from Wilfried Bony in the closing minutes.
