"I can guarantee you that there are no indicators for [Hummels or Reus] to leave," he said at a sponsor's event. "What was it today? Mats to United? For what? 20 million [euros]? With those amounts you can forget about that straight away anyway." Hummels has been repeatedly linked with United given the Premier League's club eagerness to sign at least one centre-back to replace Nemanja Vidic and Rio Ferdinand, who have departed this summer for Inter and QPR respectively. Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers, meanwhile, is looking for attacking reinforcements following the departure of Luis Suarez to Barcelona, and the added fixtures from qualifying for the Champions League. Hummels has also emerged as a potential candidate for the German captaincy following Philipp Lahm's international retirement, with German Football Association (DFB) Wolfgang Niersbach suggesting either the defender, Bastian Schweinsteiger or Manuel Neuer would be suitable choices. "Mats Hummels is such an intelligent and great lad with a convincing conduct, not only as a central defender, but wherever you put him," Niersbach told Sport Bild magazine. The BVB centre-back has been capped 36 times by his country since making his debut in May 2010 in a friendly against Malta. That is 72 caps fewer than Schweinsteiger, whom Niersbach has also suggested as a potential future bearer of the captain's armband. "He's certainly a leader par excellence," Niersbach added. "And Manuel Neuer is top class in every aspect too." Other candidates Niersbach mentioned were Toni Kroos and Mario Goetze, who are "both developing, not only on the field." Germany are set to name their new captain next month, when the squad for a friendly against Argentina in Dusseldorf on September 3 is announced.
