Martinez: Howard made Everton proud

Tim Howard's performances for the United States at the World Cup have given everyone at Everton a reason to be proud, according to Roberto Martinez.

Goalkeeper Howard was one of his country's best players as they reached the round of 16 in Brazil. The 35-year-old was particularly impressive as they lost 2-1 to Belgium in the knockout stages, making a total of 16 saves -- the highest number ever recorded at a World Cup finals match.

Martinez, a pundit at the tournament for ESPN, is looking for Howard to maintain that form to help Everton build on last season's fifth place Premier League finish.

The manager told the Liverpool Echo: "He was magnificent. Once again he showed what an incredible ambassador he is, both for club and country.

"He had a fantastic tournament, and that performance in the last 16 will stay in the history books forever.

"I certainly can't envisage a goalkeeper making that amount of saves in a World Cup game any time soon.

"He can be very proud of his performance, and I think everyone at Everton can take pride in the way one of our great ambassadors has performed too. He did the club proud as well as himself."
