Giuseppe Rossi targets 'great season'

Giuseppe Rossi hopes to return to the Italy squad this season.

Giuseppe Rossi is targeting silverware with Fiorentina and a return to the Italy fold after putting the disappointment of missing out on the 2014 World Cup behind him.

Rossi, 27, narrowly missed out a place in Cesare Prandelli's Azzurri side for the tournament in Brazil because of doubts about his fitness.

But the former Manchester United forward is refreshed from a summer break and ready to look to the future with the Viola.

"I'm relaxed and looking to the future," he said from Fiorentina's training camp in Moena, South Tyrol. "I just hope we don't lose anybody during this season, which is something which blocked us last year.

"I want to play a great season. I've only played a few times with Mario [Gomez] and it would be fantastic to be able to play many matches with him and with [Juan] Cuadrado."

If the attacking trio do manage to avoid the sort of injury agony which blighted last season, Rossi believes Fiorentina could play a major role in the title race.

However, he admits the scudetto is out of their reach for the time being.

"Juve are still the team to beat while Roma are making some big signings, and both Milan and Inter are always going to be fighting for the scudetto," he said. "We're strengthening too so it's certainly going to be an intriguing season.

"We went close to winning something last year with the Coppa Italia and it's always my dream [to win trophies]. It's going to be difficult, but we could do it."

Rossi also has ambitions with the Squadra Azzurra and would back the appointment of Antonio Conte following the departure of Prandelli.

"My objective is to return to the Italy fold," he said. "Conte is a winner and he could bring plenty of positive things to the national team. Let's just see what happens."
