Allegri to be unveiled as Juve boss

FC's Julien Laurens gives his view on why Antonio Conte is leaving Juventus.

Massimiliano Allegri will be presented as Juventus' new head coach on Wednesday following Antonio Conte's shock resignation, a club spokesperson has confirmed.

Former AC Milan coach Allegri appears to have seen off competition from Roberto Mancini to be Juve's No. 1 candidate.

Allegri arrived in Turin on Wednesday morning to negotiate with the reigning Italian champions, who have won Serie A three years in a row under Conte's management.

"Massimiliano Allegri will be unveiled at 1500 on Wednesday as the new coach of Juventus," the club's press officer Gabriella Ravizzotti told Press Association Sport. "Juventus club administrator Giuseppe Marotta will also take part in the press conference."

Conte tendered his resignation on Tuesday, saying it "may be difficult to keep winning" with the club. Former Zenit St Petersburg and Roma coach Luciano Spalletti had also been linked with the Juve hotseat.

However, Allegri stole a march on the competition as, with the players already back in preseason training, the Turin club are keen to appoint Conte's replacement immediately.

Allegri, 46, had been out of work since being dismissed as coach of AC Milan back in February. He led the Rossoneri to the 2010-11 Serie A title in his first season and followed that up by a second and third-place finish, qualifying each time for the Champions League.

He will be reunited with Andrea Pirlo, the player he allowed to leave Milan three years ago.

Allegri was replaced at the San Siro by Clarence Seedorf back in January.

Allegri may not get to work with Fabio Quagliarella, however. The Italian striker was deemed surplus to requirements by Conte, not even earning a call-up to preseason training.

He is now on the verge of joining city rivals Torino, even if Conte is no longer in charge of the Bianconeri and he could therefore have expected more of a chance this season.

According to La Gazzetta dello Sport, Juve have accepted a bid of almost three million euros for the 31-year-old, who started his career with the Granata, coming through their youth ranks in the 1990s.

Quagliarella featured 17 times in Serie A last season, but only started three games.
