Deportivo name Fernandez as coach

Victor Fernandez's last managerial job was at Gent.

Deportivo La Coruna have named Victor Fernandez as their new coach.

The much-travelled Fernandez takes over the reins of the newly-promoted Primera Division club following this week's sacking of Fernando Vazquez.

A Depor statement read: "Victor Fernandez becomes the new coach of Deportivo after an agreement was reached this afternoon between the coach and the club.''

Fernandez will be presented by the club at 7:00 p.m. local time on Thursday evening.

The Zaragoza-born 53-year-old started his coaching career at his home-town club and led them to the 1994 Copa del Rey and 1995 UEFA Cup Winners' Cup.

He then went on to manage the likes of Tenerife, Celta Vigo, Real Betis and Porto, with whom he won the Intercontinental Cup in 2004. He was most recently in charge of Belgian side Gent.

Promotion-winning coach Vazquez was dismissed on Tuesday only six weeks before the new season starts.

The 59-year-old Vazquez took charge of the former Primera Division champions towards the end of the 2012-13 season and was unable to save them from relegation, but achieved promotion back to Spain's top flight at the first time of asking.

The Galicians finished second, behind Eibar, in the Segunda Division last term, while Cordoba won the playoff final.
