Fabio Capello branded a 'greedy thief'

Russia coach Fabio Capello addresses the media about a laser interrupting goalkeeper Igor Akinfeev before Algeria's equalising goal.

A Russian politician has called on Fabio Capello to resign following the national team's early exit at the 2014 World Cup, branding the former England manager "greedy" and a "thief."

- Yokhin: Assessing Russia's failure

Russia failed to qualify from Group H, drawing two and losing one of their games as Belgium and Algeria progressed into the round of 16.

Former AC Milan, Real Madrid and Juventus boss Capello is the highest-paid manager in international football and, with Russia set to host the 2018 World Cup, he is under increasing scrutiny.

"We need to look into his work and ask him to resign," Vladimir Zhirinovsky was reported as saying by the Russian media. "But he's greedy, so of course he won't. It's pretty good to get [millions] for doing nothing. The team lost and it doesn't affect his pay in any way. Thief!"

Zhirinovsky, Russia's most controversial politician and the leader of the Liberal Democratic party, also called for Capello to be summoned to face the Duma's sports committee and criticised the Italian's appearance.

"Even the way he looks makes it hard to like him," he added. "He looks like a schoolteacher."

Fabio Capello is the highest earning manager in international football.

Another Russian MP, Oleg Pakholkov, claimed Capello only took the job as manager of Russia because of the handsome salary.

He said: "I think Capello knew very well he would achieve nothing with our team, but he simply decided it was a good way to make money. He wanted to Hoover up bundles of cash for his retirement."

The size of the players Capello selected for the World Cup was another factor in Pakholkov's criticism of him.

He said: "Look at the size of the Koreans -- even they are bigger than us. I'm not talking about Germans or Brazilians, who are obviously giants. Our guys are twice as small as them. I'm not against small players, but Capello's team can't even run fast. What are they doing in the team?"

The head of the Duma's sports committee, Igor Ananskikh, confirmed he would call on Capello to explain Russia's disappointing showing in Brazil.
