Joseph Yobo ends Nigeria career

Nigeria defender Joseph Yobo has retired from international football after his side's 2-0 World Cup defeat to France -- a game in which he scored a late own goal.

Yobo made his debut for Nigeria in 2001 when he played in a 1-1 African Nations Cup draw against Zambia.

His international career since then has seen him play in three World Cup finals. He has also scored seven goals for his country.

Speaking to KickOffNigeria.com after the defeat to France, the 33-year-old said: "This is it. I've had some great years playing for Nigeria and it has been a wonderful experience, but it's time to face my family now and concentrate on my club career."

Yobo is currently without a club, having spent the second half of last season on loan at Norwich City, where he was unable to prevent the Canaries' relegation from the Premier League.

Meanwhile, goalkeeper Vincent Enyeama said he was considering his international future.

Enyeama, tipped to take over as captain after Yobo's retirement, told KickOffNigeria.com: "It's a big prestige and honour to wear the armband for the national team, but I think I want to take some time off and think about whether I want to continue or not."

He said he would "have to sit with my wife and discuss it and make a decision," adding: "Maybe I will take a few months, maybe a few years -- but I can tell you it is very possible that this could be my last game."
