Uruguay to appeal FIFA's Suarez ban

Uruguay FA president Wilmar Valdez said on Thursday that the association will appeal against the Luis Suarez sanctions.

Suarez was banned for nine international matches -- and from all football activity for four months -- after being found guilty of biting Italy's Giorgio Chiellini.

Uruguay and Liverpool striker Suarez, 27, bit the defender during the latter stages of the 1-0 victory that secured their place in the knockout stages.

FIFA launched an immediate investigation, and an independent disciplinary panel confirmed the punishment on Thursday.

Speaking outside the FIFA hotel in Rio de Janeiro, Valdez told reporters: "We are preparing our appeal now, we have three days to do it.

"It is an excessive decision and there was not enough evidence and I have seen more aggressive incidents recently.

"It is a severe punishment. I don't know exactly which arguments they used but it is a tough punishment for Suarez.

"It's feels like Uruguay has been thrown out of the World Cup. We all know what Suarez means to Uruguay and to football around the world -- not having Suarez would be a loss to any team," Valdez said.

The sanctions means that, in addition to his World Cup immediately being over, Suarez will miss nine Premier League games as well as Champions League and Capital One Cup matches.
