Luke Shaw can go without UCL football

Luke Shaw made his World Cup debut against Costa Rica on Tuesday.

Southampton left-back Luke Shaw has given Manchester United a boost by saying he does not need Champions League football to earn a place in the England team.

Transfer Talk: Tug of war over Alexis Sanchez

Shaw, 18, is a target for the former Premier League champions, who are in advanced talks with the Saints.

But United, who have competed in the Champions League in every season since 1995-96, will not be in Europe at all after finishing only seventh in the Premier League last term.

However, Shaw, who was part of England's World Cup squad, said playing in Europe's elite club competition was not the be-all and end-all for him.

"You can't really say that because you look at the other teams [at the World Cup] and they haven't all got Champions League players, have they?" he is quoted as saying by Manchester Evening News.

The teenager made his World Cup debut in England's 0-0 draw against Costa Rica on Tuesday, and was one of three Southampton players in Roy Hodgson's squad. The trio from Everton and the five from Liverpool in Hodgson's selection did not play European football last season either.

And Shaw added: "I don't know. Obviously Champions League would help, playing against world-class players, but you can't just say that because you look at other teams that have gone through the groups and they haven't all got Champions League players.

"I don't know. I think we'll have a look at it and just to try and move on in the coming few months."
