No £34m United bid for Luke Shaw

Manchester United have not submitted a 34 million-pound bid for Southampton left-back Luke Shaw, a source has told ESPN FC, despite reports suggesting otherwise.

ESPN FC reported on Wednesday that the two clubs are in advanced talks over the future of the England international, who made his World Cup debut in the 0-0 draw against Costa Rica on Wednesday.

But while there was speculation that United had raised their offer for the 18-year-old to 34 million pounds -- which would be a club record for a defender -- a source says that is not the case.

Shaw was originally identified as a target by former United manager David Moyes and, while incoming boss Louis van Gaal has ended interest in other players the Scot wanted to sign -- such as Toni Kroos and Cesc Fabregas -- the club have continued to pursue the Saints player.

United have paved the way for Shaw's arrival by agreeing to sell reserve left-back Alexander Buttner to Dinamo Moscow.

First-choice Patrice Evra signed a one-year contract extension last month but, at 33, he is more than 14 years Shaw's senior.

United are also closing in on a deal for Athletic Bilbao midfielder Ander Herrera, who is set to become the first signing of the Van Gaal era.
