Wayne Rooney says sorry to fans

Stevie Nicol discusses whether he thinks Roy Hodgson should be sacked for not being able to advance England out of the group stage.

England's Wayne Rooney has apologised to fans after Roy Hodgson's side crashed out of the World Cup with one Group D game still left to play.

Rooney, who scored his first World Cup finals goal when he equalised against Uruguay -- a game won moments later by Luis Suarez -- said on his official Facebook page that he was "absolutely devastated" England were out.

The 2-1 Uruguay loss followed an opening 2-1 defeat to Italy, and England's fate was mathematically sealed when Costa Rica beat Italy 1-0 on Friday.

"Absolutely devastated to be out of the World Cup. Going into each game we had great belief in ourselves, but unfortunately it hasn't worked out," Rooney posted.

"Sorry to all the fans that travelled and at home that we haven't done better... gutted."

England's exit is their first at a World Cup group stage since 1958, and with a game remaining is the earliest in their history.

Coach Hodgson has said he will not resign, and has been backed by the FA.

"I don't have any intention to resign. I've been really happy with the way the players have responded to the work we've tried to do," he said.

"I'm bitterly disappointed, of course, but I don't feel I need to resign. On the other hand, if the FA think I'm not the right man to do the job that will be their decision, not mine."

FA chairman Greg Dyke told reporters: "We're supportive of Roy Hodgson -- we've asked him to stay as manager."
